Patient Information on Implant

A complete the most important person in the entire implant process. We have focused our efforts at The Implant Centre in giving information to patients at every stage – before, during and after treatment. With this in mind we would like to make all of the information available to you on the internet.

There is a great deal of detail in the next few pages, and we would suggest taking time to read it as it relates to your journey through treatment. If anything is hard to understand please don’t hesitate to contact us, we will be delighted to explain further and will adapt the web site to feedback

Basic Implants Cost

A complete implant cost may range from Rs.25000/- to 70000/- per Implant.

This includes all of the surgery, materials, time, reviews, x-rays and an initial follow up appointment. This cost does not include the removal of any teeth required for treatment, bone augmentation which is sometimes necessary, or a temporary tooth to fill a gap (not required for a tooth at the back of the mouth). We will of course inform you at your assessment of likely charges associated with your proposed treatment.

Dental Implants: Teeth That Look and Feel Like Your Own

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that a dentist places into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants are an ideal option for people in good general oral health who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason.

While high-tech in nature, dental implants are actually more like a tooth saving situation rather than the traditional bridgework, since implants do not rely on any neighboring teeth for support.

Dental implants are so natural looking, you may forget you ever lost or replaced a tooth. You know that your confidence about your teeth affects how you feel about yourself. Perhaps you hide your smile because of spaces from missing teeth. Maybe your dentures don’t feel secure. Perhaps you have difficulty chewing. If you are missing one or more teeth and would like to smile, speak and eat again with comfort and confidence, there is good news! Dental implants are teeth that can look and feel just like your own! Under proper conditions, such as placement by a dentist and diligent patient maintenance, implants can last a lifetime. Long-term studies continue to show improving success rates for implants.

What Dental Implants Can Do For you?

Replace one or more teeth without affecting bordering teeth.

• Support a bridge and eliminate the need for a removable partial denture.

• Provide support for a denture, making it more secure and comfortable.

Different Types of Implants in Use Today

Endosteal [in the bone]: This is the most commonly used type of implant. The various types include screws, cylinders or blades surgically placed into the jawbone. Each implant holds one or more prosthetic teeth. This type of implant is generally used as an alternative for patients with bridges or removable dentures.

Subperiosteal [on the bone]: These are placed on top of the jaw with the metal framework’s posts protruding through the gum to hold the prosthesis. These types of implants are used for patients who are unable to wear conventional dentures and who have minimal bone height.

Benefits of Dental Implants

  1. Eat Better: Dentures can only deliver a small fraction of the biting force of natural teeth. With dental implants, patients can bite with forces close to that of natural teeth. Better chewing efficiency results in better digestion leading to improved health of patients
  2. Speak Better: One fear, which denture wearers have, is that of their dentures coming out of their mouths when they speak. Implant supported ,prostheses are retained normally to the jaw, allowing patients to speak with confidence.
  3. Look Better: Implant supported crowns and bridges can be made to look very natural, with excellent aesthetics, which greatly enhances the patient’s smile.
  4. Feel Better: Implant supported dentures can be fabricated with reduced extensions, so that patients feel less bulk in their mouths while wearing their denture. With dental implants you won’t have your dentures slipping and sliding in your mouth again and you will enjoy excellent fitted dentures.

Advantages of Dental Implants Over Dentures or a Bridge

Every way you look at it, dental implants are a better solution to the problem of missing teeth.

• Aesthetic: Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth! Since dental implants integrate into the structure of your bone, they prevent the bone loss and gum recession that often accompany bridge work and dentures. No one will ever know that you have a replacement tooth.

• Tooth saving: Dental implants don’t sacrifice the quality of your adjacent teeth like a bridge does because neighbouring teeth are not altered to support the implant. More of your own teeth are left untouched, a significant cant long-term benefit to your oral health!

• Confidence: Dental implants will allow you to once again speak and eat with comfort and confidence! They’ll allow you to say goodbye to worries about displaced dentures and messy denture adhesives

• Reliable: The success rate of dental implants is highly predictable. They are considered an excellent option for tooth replacement.

The ideal candidate for a dental implant is in good general and oral health. Adequate bone in your jaw is needed to support the implant, and the best candidates have healthy gum tissues that are free of periodontal disease. Dental Implants are indicated as a treatment option for

• Replacing a Single Tooth: If you are missing a single tooth, one implant and a crown can replace it. A dental implant replaces both the lost natural tooth and its root

• Replacing Several Teeth: If you are missing several teeth, implant-supported bridges can replace them. Dental implants will replace both your lost natural teeth and some of the roots

• Replacing All of Your Teeth: If you are missing all of your teeth, an implant-supported full bridge or full denture can replace them. Dental implants will replace both your lost natural teeth and some of the roots.

Implant Basic Procedure

Your Pathway Through The Centre

If you decide to have treatment at Dev Dental Care, we would like to help show you what to expect at each stage of treatment.

The following pages will guide you not every case need it and indeed some cases may be more complex. You will be contacted by e mail once we have received your referral to arrange a convenient date and time for you to attend for an assessment.

Before you attend for your first visit we will send you a confirmation e mail or phone call with your appointment date and time and detailed directions.

Your Initial Assessment

This appointment involves very careful assessment of your individual case. It usually takes one hour and involves meeting the doctor at the centre following by detailed discussion of your medical and dental history and your aims for treatment.

We will then under take a very careful and detailed examination of your mouth, including an oral health and cancer screen.

You will have initial x-rays as required so we can then begin the process of assessing the bone volume available. At this stage we can often advise you on your suitability for implants and begin the detailed discussion of treatment available to you, how implants work and the stages involved.

More complex cases sometimes require more time and even for you to be seen by more than one dentist expert. We may need to make some models of your teeth and to consider further investigations such as detailed 3D imaging prior to making any decisions. All the costs involved with this will be explained to you.

Once planning is complete you will be sent a comprehensive treatment plan with all the cost

Your Implant Surgery – Stage One

  • This is the appointment everybody is frightened about, but is rarely as bad as you imagine! The actual surgery time is only about fifteen minutes although you will be booked in for an hour to allow for further discussion and planning to put you at ease.
  • The implant surgery is carried out extremely carefully and precisely, and while it is a surgical procedure most people say it is far less traumatic than having a root treatment or tooth extraction. We carry out the surgery as quickly, but as safely as possible. This expertise allows for remarkably little discomfort following treatment.
  • Simple painkillers (Paracetamol, Ibuprofen) are all that is required following implant placement for most cases. The surgery does involve some drilling but it is not the whining drill or the vibrating slow drill many people associate with dentistry. It is carried out extremely carefully and we will discuss this with you as treatment progresses.

STEP 01

  • At the end of the procedure you may have some stitches which dissolve on their own. If they are causing you annoyance or discomfort we will obviously remove them for you.

STEP 02

  • If the gap where the implant is placed is visible we will then place and adjust a temporary tooth for you. You need never have a gap at any stage of treatment if you do not wish

STEP 03

  • You will be given a detailed instruction sheet at the end of your appointment on how to maintain and clean your mouth following surgery. We will also discuss any pain relief or any antibiotics that may be required at this stage

Your Implant Surgery – Stage Two

  • Once the implants are placed, they will need to be left for at least eight/twelve weeks to allow your bone to completely fuse with the implant. After this, the implants can be uncovered and a healing cap is attached. This procedure is very quick and normally straight forward, occasionally needing just a little local anaesthetic to make you numb.
  • Sometimes, healing caps can be placed at the same time as your implant, thus making your whole implant experience even easier. Despite an exceptionally high success rate (96%), in some cases when we uncover the implant we will find that the bone hasn’t fused and will have to replace it. In most cases replacement will be simple, successful and free of charge.

Your Implant Surgery – Stage Three

  • .Appointment to have impressions taken of your teeth and the positions of the implants ,these appointments are spread out over a few weeks to allow for your gums to heal, and to allow our laboratory time to precisely make your new crowns.
  • We take extreme care in all of these phases to make sure everything is as accurate as possible. We also have specialist machines to digitally photograph and take shades of your adjacent teeth so that these crowns can be matched perfectly.
  • Once the crowns are fitted we will review you a few weeks later to make sure that the final outcome is what you had expected and that everything is healing well.

Follow up and Maintenance

  • It is absolutely vital that implants are maintained very carefully by yourself and followed up by specialists. At the end of your treatment it is important that you attend regular reviews at Dev Dental Care.
  • This is because there are cases where the bone can deteriorate around implants over a longer term we therefore need to see you on annual basis to take x-rays, check the tooth and implant, take photographs, and clean as necessary. All of this treatment is carried out with very minor charges

Preparation Before Treatment

You will not have to change anything for the treatment we offer. As your surgery will be carried out by implant surgeons who are qualified both as dentists and doctors you can rest assured you are in very safe hands. Please eat and drink fluids (non alcoholic) as normal before all procedures, do not miss breakfast.

Take all of your medication at normal times. You will be given a prescription for an antibiotic to take. If you have any allergies make sure you have discussed this with us. The normal antibiotic is called ‘amoxy-cloxa capsules and analgesic dynapar that should all be taken approximately 1 hour before the implant placement appointment.

All other medication required, and all further instructions will be given to you as you arrive. It is very hard not to be nervous about treatment, but please be assured you are in very safe hands of a team that carries out implant treatment.

What Can I Expect After Treatment?

As you know, your own teeth require conscientious at-home oral care and regular dental visits. Dental implants are like your own teeth and will require the same care. In order to keep your implant clean and plaque-free, brushing and flossing still apply!

After treatment, periodic follow-up visits will be scheduled to monitor your implant, teeth and gums to make sure they are healthy.
